The aim of this course is to develop two critical skills for research: the ability to identify relevant questions from the scientific literature and effective scientific writing. In addition, it introduces students to the process of publishing and peer reviewing of manuscripts. Every week, the course reviews a current research topic in quantitative biology. Each student will write one review, and provide two reports on colleagues' written work.

Overview

In this course, the writing process is structured into three successive stages and associated deadlines:

	* Write an “extended” outline. The outline is due on the Monday following the presentation. We will discuss it during the consultation hours. Usually, the extended outline has 4-levels: title, sections, subsections, paragraphs.

Assigning peer-reviewers

	* Avoid assigning the topic to students currently assigned on other tasks (e.g. writing, revising)
	* Double-check that the referee is not a co-author!!
	* On average, twice as many peer-reviewers as there are authors

Consider the following questions when writing your report:

	* Assess significance
 * Is the topic addressed important/interesting? (Does the review say why?)
